Comfort on the Rise: Exploring the Renewed Popularity of Waterbeds

with Boyd Sleep

Waterbeds, once a staple of 1980s interior design, are experiencing a resurgence, and Boyd Sleep is experiencing this revival. The company, known for its innovative approach to sleep solutions, has reported a significant uptick in waterbed sales, reflecting a renewed consumer interest in the unique comfort and support that waterbeds offer. "People are rediscovering the therapeutic benefits of waterbeds," explains James, a top sales associate at Boyd Sleep. "Our customers often tell us how switching to a waterbed has improved their sleep quality and helped alleviate back pain."

The demographics of waterbed enthusiasts are as varied as the designs and features now available. Lifetime users who have sworn by their waterbeds for decades continue to be staunch supporters. "I've been sleeping on a waterbed for over 30 years, and nothing else matches the comfort it provides," shares one long-time user. This enduring loyalty is coupled with interest from younger buyers, attracted by the beds' modern features such as temperature control and reduced wave action. These advancements have made waterbeds appealing to those who may not have considered them before.

Changes in consumer habits and the advent of online shopping have also transformed how waterbeds are sold. Many waterbed producers (including Boyd Flotation) have expanded their digital footprints, offering online resources to help customers understand the benefits and maintenance of waterbeds. James notes, "The internet has allowed us to reach a broader audience and we have committed resources to educate them effectively about what a modern waterbed can offer." This shift towards digital engagement reflects broader trends in retail and consumer behavior, ensuring that waterbeds remain relevant in the competitive market of sleep solutions. As Boyd Sleep continues to innovate, the future of waterbeds looks buoyant, buoyed by both nostalgic appeal and contemporary relevance.

Waterbed Myths & Misconceptions • Will It Break?

A Waterbedtime Story™ by Irvin Saathoff

Once upon a time in Waterbed retail shop out West, I was prompted to look up from my office work to see what commotion was happening on the El Camino Real outside our San Mateo, California store only to observe the Waterbed I forgot I was filling now bulging a couple feet above the 4 foot front window partition. While this is a recollection I would forever after think of and recite whenever a customer asked me “Will it break?”, fortunately Waterbed industry technology had evolved enough by then that even though I had grossly overfilled that Waterbed, perhaps by double, it did not break.

Note the over-filled waterbed in cameo lower left here.

Meanwhile over in Denver, Colorado the President of InnoMax Corporation Mark Miller recalls another popular Waterbed misconception “I may drown if my waterbed springs a leak“, of which Mark says “Certainly a primary concern of a novice waterbed owner is the fear of puncture. First of all, water mattresses are constructed from strong, durable vinyl. If the water mattress were accidentally punctured, the water will not spurt or gush out any more than water in the kitchen sink will jump out, any leakage will be captured by a sturdy safety liner fitted around the mattress. The fact is a failure from a home’s water heater could be a much greater problem. In addition most waterbed chambers come with a vinyl repair kit and a puncture (Boo-Boo) can be fixed in only a few minutes. In most cases it is not even necessary to drain the bed to make a simple repair. Innomax utilizes some of the most durable materials and advanced construction available in of our water mattresses and to prove our point take a look at this video.”

Will it break??

According to Tommy Stricherz, InnoMax General Manger and co-mastermind of the Will It Break video with Mr. Miller, “In the video we wanted to address a couple of issues.
First, we wanted to combat negative narratives with a strong visual that our waterbed is strong enough to be dropped off a building and not leak. Second, as we all know some companies take shortcuts to find less expensive ways to bring products to market. The waterbed industry certainly has been influenced by this as well.
At InnoMax we resisted the need to make things cheaper and instead went the other direction by innovating ways to make the waterbed stronger, more durable for the best nights rest possible.”
Tommy also added “For your reference, the Will It Break video was produced in 2012 and compared an InnoMax Waterbed to a brand X product which included the following differences respectively;
1. Highly plasticized 35 hand vinyl versus 28 hand vinyl,
2. 3-D reinforced corners versus T-corner seams,
3. Recessed underside seams versus Box cut side seams,
4. Full depth versus 7-3/4 depth corner seams,
5. 24 mil thick vinyl versus 18 mil and additional features not found with brand X included InnoMax full overcut and
enhanced 3/4 inch lap seam designs.”

In conclusion with the development of stronger vinyl with incredible elasticity and other innovations InnoMax, established in 1975, has continued the evolution of Waterbed technology for the past half century. Debunking Waterbed Myths: Rediscovering the Comfort and Practicality

New Lifestyle

Submitted by Kody Tusing at Boyd Sleep

Waterbeds, often shrouded in myths and misconceptions, are due for a reevaluation as we debunk the common fallacies surrounding these unique sleep solutions. One prevailing myth suggests that waterbeds are high-maintenance and prone to leaks. In reality, modern waterbeds are equipped with durable materials and advanced technology that significantly minimize the risk of leaks. With proper maintenance and the use of waterbed accessories such as heaters and conditioners, the longevity and reliability of waterbeds are on par with, if not surpassing, traditional mattresses.

Another misconception that often lingers is the notion that waterbeds lack support and are uncomfortable. Quite the contrary, waterbeds offer customizable firmness levels, allowing users to find their perfect balance between softness and support. The misconception stems from outdated perceptions, and today's waterbeds are designed with ergonomics in mind, providing excellent spinal alignment and relief from pressure points. By dispelling these myths, individuals can discover the true comfort and practicality that waterbeds bring to the table.

Waveless option

As we challenge the stereotypes surrounding waterbeds, it becomes evident that they are not just a relic of the past but a contemporary and innovative choice for a good night's sleep. By understanding the advancements in waterbed technology and addressing the common misconceptions, potential buyers can make an informed decision that aligns with their preferences and sleep needs. It's time to cast aside the myths and embrace the undeniable appeal of waterbeds in today's diverse and evolving mattress market.

World of Waterbeds, Dream Bed Japan, Part 1 “History”

by Joe (Daisuke) Yasutake
A Waterbedtime Story™ sponsored by InnoMax Corp.
Foreword & captions in italics by Irvin Saathoff

Foreword: I am very happy to introduce Joe (Daisuke) Yasutake with Dream Bed as the contributing author for our World of Waterbeds Japan installment and especially pleased he has chosen market history as the topic in this blog. Having a bit of personal history with Dream Bed Japan dating back to meeting then President Tetsuo Watanabe visiting WMA (Waterbed Manufacturers Assoc) Trade Shows when he was researching the market in the 1970s and later in the 1980s working with his son Toru Watanabe who became an industry celebrity as mentioned in our first World of Waterbeds blog (July 2023), I am quite interested to hear Joe’s perspective on the “History” as he has been involved in a variety of business aspects from international trade to retail marketing of Waterbeds in Japan.

Dream Bed Japan, Part 1 “History”:

Joe says: Our company Dream Bed was the first to bring waterbeds to Japan In 1978. The first reaction in the Japanese bed market was, ``What's up with putting water in the bedroom...it’s just wrong?!''. It was completely unacceptable. Meanwhile at that time the prevalence of conventional mattresses in Japan was less than 50%, because more than half of the Japan market was still using futons.

There was a lot of resistance to a bed filled with water. I think the initial barrier was probably resistance from retail buyers. Therefore, we decided to first increase awareness by approaching end users directly via a unique channel. Though an aggressive marketing move, our strategy was to promote waterbeds to boutique hotels for romantic getaways. This method was successful and helped spread the word about waterbeds. So rather than focusing on a traditional sales approach, the angle of addressing waterbeds as a risqué subject that people are generally reserved about discussing but are keen to hear more about, increased the speed of spreading awareness. All in all, it took about five years to reach the point where waterbeds became publicly accepted for sale to households and everyday use.

Early on Waterbeds in Japan were promoted via boutique hotels for romantic getaways as a risqué fantasy expenditure for the rich and famous. At that time over half of the bedding market in Japan was still sleeping on traditional futons.

The original Waterbed stores in Japan channeled American Waterbed retail look and feel of the day. Notice the American flag above table in the closing area (center), a nod to US Waterbed sales accomplishing 20% market penetration.

Similar to other surviving Waterbed dealers worldwide, Dream Bed included service with the products they sold, so back at the turn of the 21st century they were selling complete softside Waterbed systems for $3500 US dollars. Even hardside Waterbed systems, retailing for half that price, were commensurate with high end US market prices at the time.

Water World, the most widely recognized Waterbed retail brand in Japan (a division of Dream Bed), debuted in 1986 at a general home Waterbed sales event at a Tokyo department store. The first person to purchase a waterbed in Japan was a music school professor. From here, our waterbeds quickly became popular over the next two to three years. There were another 18 retailers dealing with waterbeds in Japan at that time. However, after peaking in 1996, sales of waterbeds began to decline due to the negative effects of excessive competition in waterbed sales. Waterbed dealers who entered the market without considering the aftercare of waterbeds withdrew one after another.

Currently there are 54 Waterbed stores throughout Japan with Dream Bed remaining as the dominant vertically integrated manufacturer and supplier to the industry.  The Waterbed business in Japan continues to evolve with some retailers moving away from waterbed sales. In response Dream Bed is opening a waterbed specialty location in Tokyo. This facility will operate as a flagship factory training center to support our retailers who want to continue developing their waterbed business and to expand our network to include more authorized dealers specializing in waterbeds.

While very much looking forward to hearing what more Joe has to tell us about what Dream Bed Japan plans for the future, I do hope you have enjoyed this month’s blog as much as I have enjoyed sharing it with you.

World of Waterbeds; Akva Denmark part 2

A Waterbedtime Story™ sponsored by InnoMax Corp.
Foreword & captions in italics by Irvin Saathoff

Foreword: I am again pleased to introduce Lars Brunso of Akva based in Denmark as contributing author for his second World of Waterbeds installment and especially happy he has chosen Service as the topic in this blog. As Akva has maintained a commitment to quality from inception by backing their product with a level of personalized service more akin to Rolls Royce, they have established an extremely devoted customer base. A real bonus for anyone really interested in the category is the linked article sharing some of Lars’ insights that have come into fruition a third of a century later.

Lars Brunso

Says Lars: Last time my article was about QUALITY, today I want to talk about SERVICE.
Service or service management is the best way for our dealers to ensure continuous contact and frequency of visits to the store/showroom.
Our quality beds are designed from the start so that the sub-components for the beds can be replaced according to the customer's wishes and needs for as long as the customer wishes to keep the bed. All the sub-components have a bar code and it only requires the customer to send a photo of the bar code label itself which is attached to the product and we will produce a new part. All our zippers are produced in Germany at the world's leading manufacturer of zippers. The zip fits again (we call an indexed zipper in the US) with the new spare part so that the teeth automatically fit together even though the bed was originally produced 20 years ago. This means that the satisfied end user returns to the Akva dealer again and again and again to renew their bed at intervals. It can be foam sides, a top cover, a complete cover, a mattress, a heater, new drawers for the drawer plinth, a new headboard to renew the color and design expression.

A recognized talent in his own right who adheres to the tenets of Scandinavian furniture tradition, Lars has added value to a number of Avka pieces conceived by notable artisans such as the Vega pictured above designed by Per Weiss. View Akva’s extensive catalog at www.akva.com and click on “Eng” to connect with the English translation site.

At the same time, the customers are often the most quality conscious and willing to pay extra for quality and are therefore not particularly affected by ups and downs in the economy. Additionally there are also customers who are aware of climate change and therefore want to look after their furniture and beds by maintaining them rather than replacing or throwing them away. It is precisely good business for us as a factory in Denmark to produce spare parts for our many thousands of beds and at the same time give our dealers a stable income.

All our Akva dealers in Europe are trained to fit and service our beds. This means that the end user contacts our dealer if the bed needs to be moved. They contact you if the bed requires a service inspection, which can be cleaning, checking the water level and filling with anti-algae agent. Our dealer knows that the service employee who performs this work has great value for customer satisfaction.

One of two dedicated trade publications from the industry hey days, in February of 1989 Waterbed magazine featured an article titled “European Market Mirrors U.S. Trends”. Conversely with a few exceptions, a third of a century later, it seems the U.S. Market would have benefited by mirroring Lars’ insights (read link below to learn more).

The qualified Akva dealer naturally makes sure to have a system in his contact with the customers, who are offered a service visit every other year to inspect and maintain the Akva bed. The customer is therefore free from bad experiences, as the preventive service visit just takes that into account. The image that our Akva dealer gets is of course in the Premium class and gives a lots of good reviews. Service management is an absolutely long-term investment that has helped make Akva Waterbeds in Denmark the leading waterbed manufacturer in Europe. It gives a really good conscience and faith in the future with so many sustainable Akva Waterbeds sleepers in all European countries. Your competitors can't just decide to step in with these competitive parameters like you have created with your own company over many years. So you have now created a unique competitive advantage in the long run.

Lars Brunso pictured above in a 1989 US waterbed trade publication being recognized as one of Europe’s leaders in waterbed marketing and product development. Read article

While not nearly as demanding as tending a baby, a waterbed does occasionally need burping to keep the mattress silent by removing air bubbles. And that occasion being a good time to add water conditioner, Akva dealers offer scheduled maintenance programs much as a Rolls Royce dealer would to service your Phantom on a regular basis. As Lars aptly points out the critical point being “information is the key”. So while a vast number of Americans remember their waterbed as the best sleep they ever had, but gravitated away not wishing to deal with servicing or moving their waterbed, Akva dealers make it a point to inform clients about service availability up front. In closing it should be noted a number of US waterbed resources, including InnoMax, also offer full service maintenance packages.

Unlocking the Therapeutic Benefits of Waterbeds for Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy

Submitted by Kody Tusing at Boyd Sleep

When it comes to restorative sleep and physical therapy, we often seek solutions that can provide comfort and support to aid in the healing process. Waterbeds may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but they hold a hidden treasure trove of therapeutic benefits. These uniquely designed beds have been proven to be valuable assets in the world of rehabilitation and physical therapy.

One of the most remarkable advantages of waterbeds in this context is their ability to conform to the contours of your body. This feature minimizes pressure points and provides even support, which is crucial for individuals recovering from injuries or surgeries. The adjustable firmness of waterbeds allows therapists to fine-tune support to meet the specific needs of each patient. This adaptability enhances patient comfort and can accelerate the healing process, making waterbeds a secret weapon in the arsenal of healthcare professionals.

Another crucial benefit of waterbeds in rehabilitation is the controlled motion provided by the water within. This minimizes the risk of further injury by stabilizing patients, particularly those with joint problems or mobility issues. It also offers a gentle, soothing massage-like effect, which can help ease muscle tension and promote relaxation. The therapeutic properties of waterbeds extend beyond mere comfort; they play a pivotal role in supporting the holistic well-being of individuals on their journey to recovery. So, if you or a loved one are considering an upgrade in your rehabilitation routine or seeking a better night's sleep during the healing process, a waterbed may be just the solution you've been looking for. The combination of comfort, support, and therapeutic qualities makes waterbeds a valuable addition to the world of rehabilitation and physical therapy, offering a path to a faster, more comfortable recovery.

Foreword: I am very pleased to introduce Lars Brunso of Akva in Denmark as contributing author of the first World of Waterbeds installment. Having first met Lars in 1986 at an international waterbed symposium in Dusseldorf Germany, I have been an ardent fan ever since because he has remained true to his commitment to excellence in advancing product technology and design.

Lars Brunso

Says Lars: So I’m still standing with Akva Waterbeds in Denmark after 42 years (1981). We have 3 focus issues that are; Quality, Service and Design. Today I’ll talk about Quality. We produce everything under one roof here in Ry, Denmark. Our building size is 5,000 sq. meters (53,820 sq. ft.) and houses our mattress, carpentry, bolstering, foam, lacquering and sewing departments.

The vinyl we use is phthalate free and double laminated since April 2000 and produced in Germany and Sweden. Wood and textile is all from Europe too. No import of raw material outside Europe. The result is consequently high quality in our product. The machines in our production comes all from Germany, Sweden and Italy. It stands for high quality and reliability resulting in minimal service and maintenance of our production.

To learn more about Akva go to www.akva.com and don’t worry if you don’t happen to read Danish, simply click on the flag to connect with the English translation site.

All our employees are skilled and educated personnel with self-planning in production and flow all is digital and automated. Salary is high in Denmark so efficiency is extremely high too. Our/my company Akva Waterbeds is Trippel AAA rated and I decide myself together with my sons how we want the company to develop. The next generation of Akva owners are my sons. They believe in Akva Waterbeds too.   We only supply dealers capable of communicating the importance of Akva-Quality. We have dealers in approximately 30 countries in Europe. We export 91% of our production/sales. In Denmark (5 million people) we speak Danish that is almost the same language in Norway and Sweden. German language is mostly used here in office since Germany, Austria and Switzerland (110 million people) is approximately half of our clientele. But also France, UK and Italy are important for us and English is the language. Sales in Europe works like this, if you want to sell something with long lasting success you must speak the local language, many forget this. Remember Quality for Akva means “less is more”, and that is good for fighting climate change.

Next time I’ll continue with focus on Service.

Lars Brunso, pictured in this 1987 US waterbed trade publication article, was recognized early on in his career as an innovative designer with the talent to blend waterbeds with Scandinavian design as well as a savvy businessman. Why Choose a Waterbed over a Memory Foam Mattress?

Submitted by Kody Tusing at Boyd Sleep

In the world of bedding, the debate between waterbeds and memory foam mattresses has raged on for years. While memory foam mattresses have gained immense popularity due to their contouring support and pressure-relieving properties, waterbeds offer a unique sleep experience that shouldn't be overlooked. Choosing between the two ultimately boils down to personal preference, but here are a few reasons why you might consider a waterbed over a memory foam mattress.

Firstly, waterbeds offer a customizable level of support that is hard to replicate with memory foam. With the ability to adjust the water level, you can fine-tune the firmness or softness of your sleep surface, catering to your individual comfort preferences. This dynamic support can be particularly beneficial for individuals with specific back or joint issues, as they can find the perfect balance between buoyancy and support that suits their needs.

Secondly, waterbeds excel at temperature regulation. One common complaint with memory foam mattresses is their tendency to retain heat, potentially leading to uncomfortable night sweats. Waterbeds, on the other hand, tend to maintain a more consistent temperature throughout the night. Some modern waterbed models even come with advanced temperature control systems, allowing you to adjust the warmth to your liking. This feature can be especially appreciated for those who live in hotter climates or struggle with night-time temperature fluctuations.

Lastly, the gentle motion of a waterbed can provide a soothing sensation that's quite distinct from the stable feel of a memory foam mattress. The subtle movement of the water beneath you can be reminiscent of being cradled in a gentle wave, which some individuals find incredibly relaxing. This can be particularly appealing for those who value a unique sleep experience and are open to exploring alternatives to traditional mattress options.

World of Waterbeds: Series Introduction

A Waterbedtime Story™ by Irvin Saathoff

Having had the good fortune of traveling worldwide doing business with waterbed designers, manufacturers, and retailers around the globe, it has been interesting to see how the waterbed industry evolved uniquely in different countries and especially interesting to see how the market has survived and thrived in a number of regions. After reaching out to notables in some of those markets, I am pleased to report we’ll be hearing from successful operations in Europe and Asia that have withstood the test of time in upcoming Waterbedtime Story™ episodes.

In the meantime, I’ll attempt to set the stage for what promises to be an enlightening and entertaining World of Waterbeds Series. While many theories have been postulated about the rise and fall of the waterbed industry in the USA, there exist a few markets stateside and many others worldwide that defy conventional wisdom. Albeit the general consensus in the US seems to dismiss waterbeds as a fad, enlightened citizenry aware of the health benefits both here and abroad continue to embrace fluid suspension sleep. As such I am uber excited that one of our contributors is based in Denmark, one of the healthiest places on the planet.

Another theory about the decline of the US waterbed business postulates that the race to the pricing bottom was its undoing. In other words, retailers competing to promote the lowest prices for cheap sleep, sometimes for $99 or less, left a significant number of dissatisfied consumers in its wake. Conversely in markets honor bound by the culture or duty bound by regulation to back product they sell, it is not unusual for waterbed sleep systems to sell for thousands of dollars. Being a country where it is common for auto dealerships and other retailers to make house calls selling turnkey product, service and support packages, I am also super thrilled that another of our contributors’ hails from Japan.

While selling mattresses for $1000s is rather passé these days, back in the heyday of waterbeds it was a big deal and not for the faint of heart. Relative to the following, and some lighthearted speculation on my part, I respectfully submit the most expensive waterbed of its day may well have been Toru Watanabe’s Wishsonic. On a more serious note, Toru’s contributions to the waterbed industry over the years in both manufacturing and retail have established a high end flotation sleep culture in Japan that endures today.

Toru Watanabe, former president of HB Dreambed, shown on US tour in the Wishsonic waterbed. Paraphrasing his FaceBook post above; the US tour, which included coverage by Car & Driver, went smoothly with exception to an elderly couple fearing it was an alien invasion from outer space.

Because producing and servicing waterbeds entails a bit more than inserting springs and/or foam into a mattress cover, it has been further postulated that the biggest of the big US manufacturers who jumped on the bandwagon back in the day, bailed out relatively quickly as promoting conventional bedding was clearly the path of least resistance. Being personally involved with certifications and compliance worldwide, I can certainly appreciate this conjecture.

Meanwhile manufacturers such as InnoMax based in Denver, Colorado have persevered by producing complete systems including components unique to fluid suspension sleep like temperature control systems, another documented therapeutic benefit of waterbeds, which enable sleepers to regulate their sleep environment. And by addressing international compliance considerations, including instructions in multiple languages, a number of these surviving manufacturers have continued to thrive by expanding business beyond their borders.

Go to website for more info

In closing, as this series promises to have little or nothing to do with selling cheap sleep and everything to do with the successful promotion of quality fluid suspension sleep, I look forward to hearing from our international guest contributors in upcoming Waterbedtime Story™ World of Waterbeds episodes and hope you do as well.

Stay Cool and Comfortable on Your Waterbed

Submitted by Kody Tusing at Boyd Sleep

Beat the heat during hot summer months

When summer temperatures soar, staying cool and comfortable while sleeping becomes a top priority. If you're a waterbed enthusiast, you're in luck! Waterbeds offer unique advantages that can help you beat the heat and enjoy a refreshing sleep experience even on the hottest summer nights. In this article, we'll share valuable tips specifically tailored to waterbed owners, allowing you to maximize the cooling benefits of your water-filled sleep oasis.

Optimize Waterbed Temperature:
One of the significant advantages of a waterbed is its temperature control feature. Adjusting the temperature of your waterbed can make a noticeable difference in keeping you cool during hot summer nights. Lowering the temperature slightly can create a refreshing and soothing sleep surface. Experiment with different temperature settings to find the sweet spot that works best for you. The coolness of the water, combined with the supportive comfort of a waterbed, can provide a blissful sleep environment even in the midst of a summer heatwave.

Choose Breathable Bedding:
To enhance the cooling properties of your waterbed, choose bedding materials that are lightweight and breathable. Opt for natural fibers such as cotton or bamboo sheets, which promote airflow and wick away moisture. This helps prevent heat and sweat from being trapped, keeping you comfortable throughout the night. Additionally, consider using a thin and breathable mattress protector to allow for better air circulation around your waterbed, further enhancing its cooling capabilities.

Utilize Cooling Accessories:
In addition to adjusting the temperature and choosing breathable bedding, you can further enhance the cooling effects of your waterbed with the help of cooling accessories. Consider using a cooling mattress topper designed specifically for waterbeds. These toppers are often infused with cooling gel or feature ventilation channels to dissipate heat. Additionally, using a cooling pillow or placing a chilled gel pack near your neck or under your knees can provide localized cooling, helping you stay comfortable and relaxed.

With a waterbed, you have a unique advantage when it comes to beating the heat during hot summer nights. By optimizing the temperature settings of your waterbed and selecting breathable bedding materials, you can create a cool and comfortable sleep environment. Adding cooling accessories, such as a specialized mattress topper or a chilled gel pack, can further enhance the refreshing qualities of your waterbed. Embrace the benefits of your water-filled sleep oasis and enjoy restful nights, free from the discomfort of overheating. Stay cool, sleep well, and wake up rejuvenated to embrace the summer days ahead.

Sensory Attenuation and Flotation Sleep

A Waterbedtime Story™ by Irvin Saathoff

For some of us who grew up in the pop culture which evolved over the latter half of the 20th century, the mention of sensory attenuation or sensory deprivation might conjure up images of the 1980 horror movie “Altered States”. And while mid-century experiments involved extreme sensory deprivation (i.e. total darkness & sound proofing) which could cause hallucinations and bizarre thoughts, even without the use of drugs, more controlled reductions or removal of stimuli from one or more of the senses have evolved into more user friendly perceptual isolation environments often referred to as isolation tanks or float pools.

An open fiberglass float pool at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA allows subjects with clinical anxiety to float comfortably, without the apprehension one might encounter in an enclosed float environment.

Perhaps not so coincidentally, around the time “Altered States” was released, US flotation sleep waterbed sales were in their heyday.  A waterbed and a sensory deprivation water chamber are both structures that use water to provide a unique physical experience. Both structures are designed to create a calming and soothing environment for sleeping and relaxation, but the methods and applications differ.

A waterbed is typically a large mattress filled with water, which is surrounded by a soft foam or rigid wood frame. This provides a comfortable and evenly distributed sleeping surface, and the water is heated and circulated to keep the temperature consistent. The feeling of lying on a waterbed is often described as “floating”, due to the buoyancy of the water. The advantage of sleeping in a temperature controlled waterbed is that you can stay dry during the experience.

Temperature controlled flotation sleep allows the body weight to be distributed more evenly over the surface, eliminating pressure on various parts of the body for deeper more rejuvenating sleep.

On the other hand, a sensory deprivation water chamber is a large tank of water that is used for therapeutic purposes. The tank is filled with a high concentration of epsom salts, which increases the buoyancy of the water and creates a weightless environment. The water is kept at a consistent temperature and is often kept in complete darkness. This environment is designed to reduce all external stimuli, allowing the user to experience a calming and relaxing state of deep relaxation...albeit soaking wet.

While a significant number of sports figures have reported their preference for sleeping on waterbeds over the years, “several NFL teams, including the New England Patriots, Los Angeles Rams, and New Orleans Saints reportedly use floating as a way to increase players’ quality of sleep as well as help with recovery.” Wikipedia

Softside fluid suspension mattresses look just like a traditional innerspring mattress, fit into conventional bed frames and utilize traditional sheets & bedding.

In conclusion both a flotation sleep waterbed and a sensory deprivation water chamber are designed to provide a calming experience, but they do so in different ways. The biggest difference is a waterbed provides a comfortable and evenly distributed sleeping surface in a dry environment, while a sensory deprivation water chamber gets you wet.

1.    Superior Support: Waterbeds conform to your body shape and distribute your weight evenly, providing excellent support and pressure relief. This can lead to a more comfortable and restful sleep, with fewer aches and pains in the morning.
2.    Alleviates Back Pain: Waterbeds can be great for individuals who suffer from back pain. The water can help to alleviate pressure on the spine, providing relief and support where it's needed most. Additionally, the motion of the water can provide a gentle massage, helping to soothe sore muscles and promote relaxation.
3.    Customizable Comfort: With a waterbed, you can adjust the temperature and firmness to your exact preferences, providing a customized sleep experience. Plus, with modern designs and materials, you can find waterbeds that are just as easy to move and maintain as traditional mattresses.
4.    Longer Lifespan: Waterbeds are built to last and can provide many years of comfortable sleep. With proper care and maintenance, a waterbed can last longer than a traditional mattress, making it a smart investment in your sleep quality and overall well-being.

You’ll need a hose

CONS:
1.    Maintenance: Waterbeds require more maintenance than traditional mattresses. You need to change the water every few years, add water conditioner to prevent algae growth, and maintain the heater and other components. This can be time-consuming and costly.
2.    Price: Waterbeds are generally more expensive than traditional mattresses. The cost of a waterbed can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, depending on the size, style, and features. This may not be a feasible option for those on a tight budget.

In conclusion, a waterbed can offer a range of benefits, from superior support and customizable comfort to alleviating back pain and providing a unique sleeping experience. While there are some downsides to consider, such as maintenance and price, the benefits of a waterbed may outweigh these factors for many people. If you're looking for a comfortable and unique sleep experience, a waterbed is definitely worth considering. With proper care and maintenance, it can provide you with many years of restful sleep and improved overall well-being.

The Art of Waterbeds

A Waterbedtime Story™ by Irvin Saathoff

Back in the 2010’s a longtime friend of mine from the German waterbed industry contacted me with an unusual request. The Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt am Main was needing to replace the waterbed in a Thom Merrick sculpture they had had on display since 1988. So, as the 20+ year old waterbed had gotten damaged beyond repair and the original manufacturer was no longer in business, the President of InnoMax Mark Miller stepped up to save the day by producing a replica for the work of art which was then valued at €250,000 Euros ($306,000 US Dollars).

Thom Merrick sculpture Frankfurt, Germany 1988* & Hans Peters photograph Amsterdam, Holland 1971**

Coincidentally when I first met my German friend he was working for a waterbed distributor out of Holland. As evidenced by the 1971 photograph above, the Dutch were hot on the heels of the Americans who had just been granted a patent for the modern day waterbed that same year. Meanwhile, by the mid-1970’s I found myself purveying waterbeds in California to support my starving art student lifestyle. Looking back it seems to have been an interesting twist of fate that the then burgeoning waterbed industry was helping finance my art studies.

The twist of fate was I eventually became art director for one of the largest waterbed manufacturers in the US. Boy howdy what an eye opener, traveling around the world meeting all the movers and shakers who had given birth to an industry that in a few short years had grown to dominate 20% of the US bedding market...and more in some countries. And the pièce de résistance, though an uber challenge for those of us who worked year round developing new products and merchandising materials, was always the annual industry WMA (Waterbed Manufacturer’s Association) Trade Show which was attended by waterbed industry elite from around the world.

Coronado Wall Unit Waterbed (click here) & assembly instructions by yours truly

Albeit things have changed since the days the WMA could fill the Superdome to overflowing, pretty much anywhere you go in today’s home furnishings market you can’t swing a stick without hitting somebody from the waterbed industry. As such I’ve had the pleasure of working with a number of great designers who continue to have an impact on home fashion. Having literally learned the nuts & bolts as a commercial artist illustrating assembly instructions for timeless classics like the Coronado Wall Unit above, I’m pleased to currently be involved with a project now off the drawing board and into prototyping which promises to turn heads when it launches.

In the meantime and notwithstanding the contribution of fine art notables like Merrick & Peters, as there are so many people I am aware of around the world who feel there is no better sleep solution than fluid suspension, I do not believe we have seen the last of the Art of Waterbeds.

Waterbed Maintenance - How You Should Do It And Why You Should Care

Submitted by Kody Tusing at Boyd Sleep

Waterbed Support System

Waterbeds have been a popular choice for comfortable and therapeutic sleep for many years but have been seeing a roaring uptick in popularity with manufacturers such as Boyd Flotation leading the charge. The unique feature of waterbeds is that they provide customized support and pressure relief to the body. Additionally, they can also help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with various medical conditions, including back pain, arthritis, and fibromyalgia.
Like any other mattress, a waterbed also requires proper maintenance to ensure longevity and optimal performance. In this article, we will discuss the importance of maintaining a waterbed and the steps you can take to keep your bed in excellent condition.

Why is Maintaining a Waterbed Important?
Hygiene and Cleanliness:
Keeping your waterbed clean and hygienic is crucial to maintaining good health. A waterbed provides a warm, moist environment that can encourage the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms. This can cause skin irritation, allergies, and respiratory problems.
Regular cleaning and maintenance can prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and maintain a healthy sleeping environment. Cleaning your waterbed regularly can also help prevent odors and stains from forming.

1. Longevity:
A waterbed is a significant investment that requires proper maintenance to ensure longevity. B following the manufacturer's instructions and proper care, you can extend the life of your waterbed.
Frequent maintenance, including cleaning, can help prevent leaks before they form. Regular maintenance and inspection can help you detect and fix any leaks before they cause significant damage.
2. Comfort:
A well-maintained waterbed offers maximum comfort and support. Over time, the water in your waterbed may start to lose its temperature, which can affect your sleeping experience. It can become uncomfortable, and the body may experience pressure points, which can lead to pain and discomfort.
Regular maintenance can help maintain the proper water temperature and ensure optimal comfort. Additionally, a well-maintained waterbed can provide the necessary support and pressure relief for your body, reducing pain and discomfort.

Mattress Maintenance Cycle

Steps to Maintaining a Waterbed
1. Clean the Mattress:
Cleaning your waterbed mattress is an essential step in maintaining hygiene and cleanliness. You should clean your waterbed mattress every six months or as per the manufacturer's instructions. To clean your mattress, you should first remove all the bedding, including the mattress pad and sheets.
Next, you can use a vinyl cleaner to clean the surface of the mattress. Be sure to use a non-abrasive cleaner to prevent damage to the vinyl surface. Wipe the cleaner using a soft cloth or sponge, and rinse with water.
Once the mattress is clean, you should allow it to dry completely before replacing the bedding. Avoid using a hairdryer or other heat sources, as this can damage the vinyl surface.
2. Replace the Heater:
The heater in your waterbed is responsible for regulating the water temperature. Over time, the heater may become less efficient or stop working altogether. You should replace your heater every five years or as per the manufacturer's instructions.
To replace the heater, you should first unplug the old one and remove it from the bed. You can then install the new heater according to the manufacturer's instructions. Be sure to plug the new heater into a grounded outlet and check that it is functioning correctly before adding water to the bed.
3. Check for Leaks:
Leaks are a common problem with waterbeds, and they can cause significant damage if not detected and fixed promptly. To check for leaks, you can start by visually inspecting the mattress for any signs of damage, such as cracks, holes, or tears. If one is noticed, you can purchase a vinyl patch kit made specifically for waterbed mattresses that can easily be used to repair holes, rips or tears.

Archimedes’ Principle, Fluid Dynamics and Waterbed Logic

A Waterbedtime Story™ by Irvin Saathoff

Swept up in the popularity wave of the 1970’s and working for a waterbed shop to supplement my starving design student lifestyle, but being raised with a mid-western show-me state of mind, it took me a minute to buy into the logic of fluid suspension sleep. And though having become fairly well educated about the health benefits very often backed by medical studies, as a skeptical mechanically inclined kind of guy, it wasn’t until Mark Miller (President of InnoMax) wove Archimedes Principle into the dialogue that the logic of waterbed fluid dynamics began to sink in.

Archimedes’ principle, physical law of buoyancy, discovered by the ancient Greek mathematician and inventor Archimedes, states that “any body completely or partially submerged in a fluid at rest is acted upon by an upward, or buoyant, force, the magnitude of which is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the body”* As Archimedes' principle is a law of physics fundamental to fluid mechanics, I could finally wrap my head around the logic. Furthermore Mr Miller (aka M) asserts the fluid dynamics of waterbed sleep are interactive and different than active support of mattresses that push up against the body or passive support mattresses which sag as both contribute to pressure points.

Archimedes of Syracuse (c. 287 – c. 212 BC) Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, astronomer, and inventor**

Speaking of sinking in and wrapping ones head around things, as Archimedes’ principle further verified fluid contours to uniquely shaped objects, ironically it meant water was wrapping around my head the further I sank into bed. So similar to a uniquely shaped iceberg floating in the ocean, a sleeper immersed in a waterbed will experience contouring buoyant support evenly distributed head to toe. As waterbeds have evolved over the years to include a variety of adjustability features and enclosures emulating conventional mattress looks, for your reference, the most immersive designs feature oversized low tension top surfaces with virtually nothing between the sleeper and water.

Ergo, in keeping with Archimedes’ principle which also addressed the diversities of shape, M/InnoMax to this day produces oversize and low tension top surface waterbed mattresses to immerse bodies into a virtually weightless sleep environment. So would you believe yours truly, who secretly doubted other associates complaining about non-waterbed sleep surfaces on business trips back in the day, finally became a convert. The bottom line is, while I’ve slept on all manner of surfaces over the years and have diversified sleep surfaces in our home to include digital air, my deepest most immersive sleep experiences have always been in waterbeds.

In conclusion, Archimedes’ principle logically presents quantifiable fluid dynamic science identifying the unique properties of Waterbed fluid suspension interactive support and immersive sleep.

Sleeping Hot and How Waterbeds are Here to Save the Day (night)!

As we crank up our furnaces to fight the frigid temperatures of the outdoors, it becomes more and more common for people to suffer from restless nights due to irregular body temperatures. A bed that becomes uncomfortably warm or chilly is more likely to wake you up at night. The ideal sleeping temperature has been scientifically proven on multiple occasions to be between 60- and 67-degrees Fahrenheit. Sometimes our bodies give off so much heat, that it feels simply impossible to achieve, and the main culprit is usually from foam and innerspring mattresses.

The process of sleeping naturally decreases our body’s core temperature, causing us to want to cozy up under covers and comforters. However, this can cause your body to feel hot, humid and uncomfortable and disrupt REM sleep, creating an awful sleep experience for you or your partner.

On the other hand, sleeping too cold has negative effects on your sleep as well. Our bodies try to rapidly increase our core temperature if it feels we’re too cold. What this does is cause your body to go into overdrive mode in an effort to keep warm which causes increased blood pressure, worsening breathing and more.

Modern waterbeds like the ones from Boyd Flotation provide supreme temperature sensitivity that you as the sleeper have full control over. All modern waterbeds are compatible with Boyd’s waterbed heater that helps to keep your bed at a comfortable temperature while you sleep. Water is the number one medium for temperature control, drawing your body’s heat out and dispersing it across the water molecules, ensuring a soothing, relaxing night sleep. The next time you wake up drenched in sweat, tossing or turning, or just generally feel you had a rough night of sleep and are still exhausted, it might be time to explore temperature-controlled sleep with a modern waterbed!

Destination Shopping for Waterbeds

A Waterbedtime Story™ by Irvin Saathoff

There was a time back in the 1980s when it seemed like there was a brick & mortar waterbed retail shop on every street corner. Having only just begun in earnest after the modern day waterbed was patented in 1971, and as none of the nationwide retailers like Sears and Montgomery Ward who tried selling waterbeds experienced much success, it was a multitude of smaller regional retail operations that drove industry growth.

With waterbed sales peaking at 22% of the domestic mattress industry in 1987*, a number of retailers had grown quite rapidly with multiple locations. As such one anomaly which arose was the advent of 3 different retailers in California all with multiple locations that called their retail operations The Bedroom. So for those wholesalers and manufacturers who might have been supplying all 3 it became necessary to identify them by their regional appellations namely The Bedroom San Diego, The Bedroom Orange County and The Bedroom Bay Area.

Albeit none of the aforementioned operations are still in business, as they disappeared along with a number of other retailers when waterbed popularity waned, a significant number of these operations still exist today having diversified their mattress offerings or transitioned into the conventional furniture business. Unfortunately for the multitude of people who still really love waterbeds and continue to sleep on them today, since the great majority of former waterbed retailers have forsaken their heritage, brick & mortar waterbed retailers have become much harder to find.

So for those who like to try before they buy, traveling hundreds of miles to experience the latest waterbed offerings is the new norm. Fortunately a few retailers who have continued to promote the benefits of fluid suspension sleep are located in desirable locations that can make destination shopping for waterbeds downright enjoyable. One such operation is City Furniture based out of Florida, originally founded as Waterbed City back in the 1970’s. With multiple locations across the southeast, City Furniture features the Afloat softside system.

InnoMax operates a retro factory showroom located in Denver which has been selling waterbeds for nearly a half century and a trendy Loveland Centerra outlet mall showroom nearby Fort Collins, Colorado.

Meanwhile boutique destinations have become popular in Colorado with 2 InnoMax showrooms in desirable locations. The retro factory showroom in Denver is conveniently situated on I70 between the International Airport and the Rocky Mountain summit corridor. Or if you may be headed to Estes Park, Jackson Hole or Yellowstone, the trendy InnoMax Loveland/Fort Collins showroom on I25 North might suite your fancy. In any case Colorado being a destination for all seasons, waterbed lovers can be found year round test resting the latest innovations in fluid sleep at InnoMax.  Featuring a wide selection of hardside and softside waterbeds with an extensive variety of flotation sleep support options, many a destination waterbed shopper make a day of it. The Waterbed Buying Guide from Real Waterbed Enthusiasts

By Boyd Flotation

Often featured in movies and television, pop culture has created many misconceptions about waterbeds. Extremely popular from the 1970’s to the 1990’s, Waterbeds were on the forefront of promoting specialty sleep. While many waterbeds have disappeared from the mattress stores, waterbeds still have a large following among those who swear by its therapeutic properties.

Whatever Happened to Waterbeds?
No mattress has ever been able to be as ‘cool’ as the waterbed. The popularity in the 1970’s deemed them the Bed of the Sexual Revolution. By 1986, waterbeds represented 20% of the bed market but then it became a victim of its own success. While waterbeds were associated with being trendy and fun, they weren’t associated with sleep. Older waterbeds also had technological problems; springing leaks, heaviness, excessive maintenance, and compilation.

However, waterbeds have come a long way since then. Newer beds used air and water pockets to reduce the wave sensation but still allowed the bed to maintain its benefits. Vinyls like the ones from Boyd Flotation have become more sophisticated and refined, solving many of the earlier complaints and allowing waterbeds to become more specialized to sleep. With the waterbed’s fall from the fashion world and other specialty sleep options entering the market such as memory foam, latex foam and air beds, waterbeds are increasingly hard to find.

Who Still Uses Waterbeds?
Ironically, even at the height of their popularity, waterbeds were never associated with sleep and comfort even though that is clearly their strongest benefit. Waterbeds were originally invented for medicinal uses such as preventing bed sores for those who were bedridden for long periods of time, arthritis and for cribs used by premature babies. Hospitals today still use waterbeds not only for these reasons but because of their therapeutic value and the ability to control the bed’s temperature using a simple thermostat.

Waterbeds still have a large ‘cult’ following. These are people who saw past the waterbed fad and realized that waterbeds are extremely therapeutic. For athletes and others who suffer from orthopedic problems, waterbeds cannot be beaten in terms of value. The waterbed shapes exactly to the body, minimizing pressure around joints and the spine allowing the spinal functions to fully relax aiding in the comfort of those who complain of back problems.

For those who suffer from allergies, it is impossible for dirt, dead skin and dust mites to penetrate waterbeds. Dust mites can cause asthma and eczema making waterbeds a great option for those concerned with their waterbed’s hygiene.

Are Waterbeds Hard to Maintain?
Despite the myth, waterbeds are actually really easy to maintain. Water only needs to be added when the bed is set up and if the bed is moved. A waterbed conditioner, such as the Blue Magic All Purpose Waterbed Conditioner is added once per year to prevent the growth of bacteria and to protect the vinyl mattress and foam.

Softside Waterbed

Hardside Waterbeds vs. Softside Waterbeds
A hardside waterbed uses a traditional wooden box frame and does not contain any wave reducing material, allowing you to experience the full motion that the waterbed has to offer. However, some hardside waterbeds can still reduce the motion of the bed depending on what the preferred comfort level is.

Softside waterbeds are often preferred over hardside mattresses because they appear to look just like a traditional mattress. They can fit into existing bedroom furniture, use standard sheets and do not need a wood frame in order for the mattress to keep its form. Softside waterbeds still retain their contouring and pressure free support while eliminating the wave sensation typically associated with traditional waterbeds. Softside waterbeds can also offer extended specialized support. Customers can choose specialized bladders to fit their needs or even choose a dual bladder systems to control the fill level of each side of the mattress allowing you and your partner to choose your own preferred comfort level.

How do I Find the Right Waterbed?
While most insurance policies cover waterbeds in the same category as electrical equipment that uses water  it is important that a waterbed company offer a good lifetime warranty and free returns and exchanges, like those from Boyd Flotation. Online retailers allow waterbeds and waterbed care and accessories to be shipped straight from the manufacturer providing a huge discount for those who are worried about the price tag.

It may be easy just to classify waterbeds as a mattress filled with water, but a good waterbed is so much more than that. The variety of bed designs make waterbeds the most versatile type of bed on the market. More than just hardside and softside, there are numerous options for any type of sleeper.

What did Mark Twain say about Waterbeds?

A Waterbedtime Story™ sponsored by: InnoMax Corp.

In 1871, a waterbed was in use in Elmira, New York, for "invalids". It was briefly mentioned by Mark Twain in his article "A New Beecher Church", which was published in The New York Times on 23 July 1871. Twain wrote: "In the infirmary will be kept one or two water-beds (for invalids whose pains will not allow them to be on a less yielding substance) and half a dozen reclining invalid-chairs on wheels. The water-beds and invalid-chairs at present belonging to the church are always in demand, and never out of service".

So while the pressure relieving benefits for burn patients and bed ridden invalids subject to bed sores have been known for quite some time, it wasn’t until after waterbeds became popular for residential use in the early 1970s that a significant amount of research on the health benefits relative to the general public was conducted. Being rather young and of the mind sleep was a necessary inconvenience at that time, it wasn’t until I’d aged a bit that I came to appreciate why so many people were so interested in researching the health benefits of sleep.

As it is now well documented that quality sleep can help rejuvenate the body while bolstering immune system and mental acuity, the quest has now become maximizing quality sleep. Things have certainly evolved for me on that front as now I find myself checking my sleep monitoring smart watch every morning to see how well I slept. And albeit not scientific, my personal observation is that my score goes way down if I’m tossing and turning which often happens when traveling and trying to sleep on uncomfortable mattresses.

Given any force greater than 32mm/Hg applied to the human body will cause a restriction of the capillaries resulting in diminished blood flow, and that during a normal night of sleep an average person attempting to sleep on a too firm or too soft mattress may change positions 60-80 times due to impaired blood flow, it makes sense the elimination of pressure points would reduce tossing and turning for a deeper more restful sleep. The following pressure mapping comparison, circa 2000, illustrates how a waterbed distributes support more evenly too facilitate keeping pressure points below 30 mm/Hg.
While you can still find Free Flow mattresses for use with hardside box frames reminiscent of the original “modern” waterbed patented in 1971 online, fluid suspension sleep product design and technology has advanced significantly over the past 50 years.

One of the most significant advancements has been the advent of softside waterbeds. While looking like a traditional conventional mattress, softside waterbed mattresses include water chambers instead of innerspring support cores. So in addition to the convenience of using conventional size sheets and bedding, softside waterbeds offer the warmth and comfort of a hardside waterbed, without the hardside rails. And with fluid support, body weight is distributed more evenly over the surface mitigating pressure points to improve your quality of sleep.

While softside waterbeds may also be found online, better still, if you are ever in Denver, Colorado I personally recommend you test rest flotation sleep at the InnoMax factory showroom. And though you need not worry about bringing a pillow as your sleep consultant will be happy to provide one, because clients frequently doze off during test rest sessions, be sure to wear your sleep monitoring smart watch. For information contact 1-800-INNOMAX to schedule your flotation sleep test rest.

In conclusion, while documented a century prior to patents being issued for modern day waterbeds, Mark Twain’s remarks continue to speak volumes about the medical and health benefits of flotation sleep.
