Boyd Market Agenda Includes Broad Range of New Specialty Sleep Products

to Help Retailers Differentiate, Compete

January 23, 2011 - Boyd Specialty Sleep is coming to the Las Vegas market with a sweeping spectrum of product introductions and line enhancements that will extend its wide-ranging portfolio of specialty mattress products.

The company’s presentations include the first-ever ultra premium line extension in its Natural Flex® collection; two new Lux Aire™ beds; a new value-based Silver collection designed for use with Boyd’s patented Sleep Metrics® retail program; two new “occasional use” beds, plus a new Bonus Base™ Platform and storage concept.

“As a specialty company, we thrive on innovation and on meaningful product developments that help our retail customers differentiate themselves and stay ahead of their competition,” said company president Dennis Boyd.

“For this market, we’ve developed a wide range of new bedding products and components that reflect our focus on healthy, safe and sustainable processes and materials,” he added.

“Everything we make is designed to improve the quality of people’s lives by improving the quality of their sleep.”

NEW NATURAL FLEX® ULTRA COLLECTION

A new four-model, ultra premium latex bed series in Boyd’s Natural Flex collection—called Natural Flex Ultra—is the first extension in the line in a decade. The new high-end models include premium Talalay latex cores up to nine inches tall, a natural cashmere quilt and a proprietary natural cotton/rayon cover developed by Boyd. The fabric has a soft hand and helps ensure a cool, dry sleep surface.

Natural Flex Ultra models, which have achieved Level 1 certification in the Sleep Specialty Association’s (SSA) safety and environmental program, also feature a demonstrably different single-needle quilt pattern based on a hand-drawn, abstract design.

Although up to five inches taller than mattresses in the original Natural Flex line, the Ultra models include the same exclusive tri-zoned and Channel Venting™ foam layers at both the top and base of the mattress, which provide superior lumbar support and maximum air circulation.

The top layer uses the company’s quality premium Talalay Latex foam while the unique Foamspring™ base—made of Boyd’s Reflexa™ support foam—adds durability yet enhances the resiliency and reflex action of the entire bed.

The uppermost latex layers are also tri-zoned, using pincore ventilation. Original Natural Flex models feature quality Dunlop and engineered latex.

Foams in every Natural Flex product are layered specifically to deliver progressive or graduated firmness. The layers are also uniformly “pre-crushed” prior to zone-cutting to provide more lasting, uniform support.

According to Boyd, the new Natural Flex Ultra beds will be sold to select accounts and can be shipped UPS for use on an existing base or with the company’s platform frame, foundation or power base.

The high-end models are expected to retail between $1,499 and $2,999. Original Natural Flex models currently retail in the $399 to $1,299 range.

NEW LUX AIRE I AND II BEDS

Boyd Specialty Sleep will present two new patent-pending premium air beds with dual chambers for individual sleeping comfort, plus air-cushioned edge supports to prevent perimeter sag.

The 12-inch Lux Aire I and 14-inch Lux Aire II models—available in queen and king sizes—have a built-in air pump and come with an ergonomic hand control that adjusts both left and right chambers, as well as the perimeter support chamber.

“The air bed clearly has enormous consumer appeal as a $600 million segment of the specialty sleep category,” Boyd commented.

“These Lux Aire models are an excellent quality/value solution for consumers who have a preference for adjustable, air-based comfort and support.”

Both models incorporate Boyd’s patented, dual-walled horizontal beam design made of a thick, puncture-resistant flexible material with a nylon fabric exterior.

The Lux Aire I bed has a convoluted foam top in a washable Micro-Pure™ fabric sleeve that reduces friction and protects the air mattress. The Micro-Pure cover completely encapsulates the foam with a ventilated, anti-microbial fabric and has a moisture-proof barrier incorporated into the base layer. The zippered, micro-fiber luxury cover is removable and washable.

The Lux Aire II model has a three-inch quilt of memory foam in the same washable fabric sleeve. The breathable, cotton-based Stay Pure™ quilted cover also zips off and washes easily.

Both Lux Aire beds are expected to retail from $599 to $799 in queen.

“These are high quality air beds that can be sold at velocity price points,” Boyd said. “Our retailers have a great opportunity to present these products as traffic builders at price points well below our current models, and consequently increase their share of the air bed segment.”

NEW SLEEP METRICS™ SILVER COLLECTION

Designed for use with its patented, computer-based Sleep Metrics retail program, Boyd has added a new Silver line of value-based specialty beds to its existing Gold and Platinum collections.

The four new Silver models, which use premium, high-density foams and quality latex materials, have an anticipated retail in queen of $999, which includes the foundation.

Boyd’s Gold and Platinum specialty sleep sets (also four models in each collection), currently retail in queen at $1,799 and $2,499, respectively.

“We felt it was important to expand our Sleep Metrics offerings to include a more affordable line of premium products,” Boyd noted. “The new Silver line enables retailers who rely on our selection process in their stores to offer additional, value-oriented specialty options to their customers.”

Boyd’s proprietary Sleep Metrics program captures critical consumer data and sleep preferences in under two minutes, using a touch-screen kiosk and printer.

Because the program is focused on determining the customer’s total sleep need—mattress plus pillow—the system recommends the ideal bed and two pillow combinations.

“When it comes to the quality of sleep, we recognize the importance of the right pillow as much as the importance of the right bed,” Boyd explained. “That’s why the Sleep Metrics process incorporates the pillow into the sale, rather than treating it only as an add-on purchase.”

Boyd offers six pillows as part of its Sleep Metrics program, ranging from visco foam and latex designs to gel/fiber combinations.

INNOVATIVE NEW OCCASIONAL-USE MATTRESSES

Reflecting its commitment to innovation that addresses quality of life through better sleep, Boyd has developed several new occasional-use specialty beds that provide comfort and support, as well as ease and convenience.

Comfort Ease™

A new fold-away guest bed called Comfort Ease™ uses a tubular steel frame with a perimeter, no-sag spring suspension. The combination of visco with poly foam in the mattress is 1.5 inches thick and has a soft fleece cover that can be zipped off and machine-washed.

The retail price in a single size is from $69 to $99. The Comfort Ease bed supports up to 300 pounds, requires no assembly and folds to only a 5.5-inch thickness for simple storage.

“We’ve studied the best sleep solutions for limited spaces and found that a well-designed fold-away bed is far more comfortable, lighter and portable than roll-away models,” Boyd said.

Otto-bed™ Ottoman

Boyd’s new Otto-Bed product leverages the concept and convenience of using everyday furniture as yet another sleep solution.

The company’s two-inch-thick, high-density poly foam mattress folds easily into a 32-inch wide ottoman. The ottoman fabric—a neutral, mocha-colored micro-suede—blends into most room decors or stores easily because of its compact size. The ottoman has four casters for easy movement.

Available in one size only, the Otto-bed with removable washable cover is set to retail from $149 to $199.

NEW BONUS BASE™ AND STORAGE CONCEPT

For its final market introduction, Boyd Specialty Sleep will present a new Bonus Base platform bed frame—a patent-pending design that eliminates the need for any traditional box spring, foundation or metal frame, while providing generous under-bed storage.

“In effect, this one base not only creates useable space but also replaces both a foundation—whose price is typically built in to the price of the mattress—and a standard bed frame, an add-on that the consumer often pays for in her purchase process,” Boyd said.

“The Bonus Base enables the retailer to give the customer a far more practical and versatile option in a base for her mattress.”

The coated all-steel construction of the Bonus Base supports up to 3,500 pounds and assembles in minutes without tools.

At 14 inches high (versus the standard 6- or 8-inch high frame), the design provides ample room under the base to store loose household items, or can be purchased with Hide-A-Way Drawers™, Boyd’s exclusive K-D canvas storage compartment.

Attached to the base with a Velcro® strap, the sturdy compartment has wire supports and rests on four casters, making its simple to remove, roll out for gathering or packing items, and then re-secure under the base.

Boyd’s exclusive Hide-A-Way Drawers compartment needs no assembly and is available in pairs expected to retail at $49.99 per set.

Providing sag-free and squeak-free mattress support, the Bonus Base has optional headboard and footboard brackets and can be folded for easy transport and delivery through stairwells or small living spaces. The product, which can be shipped UPS, also negates the need for split-queen foundations.

Retailing in all sizes from $59 to $149 (Bonus Base only), Boyd noted that the new frame also is available with a foundation cover that gives the product the look of a traditional covered box spring.

“Many retailers prefer that their product displays have a more conventional appearance, so we offer a quilted cover with a non-skid top that fits over the corner and side brackets to emulate the appearance of a foundation,” Boyd explained.

“We’re pleased to say that the finished look is extremely effective. The cover option and Hide-A-Way Drawers™ offer the retailer several profitable add-on opportunities to an aggressively priced platform frame,” he added.

Showing in Las Vegas in space B-826, Boyd Specialty Sleep was founded by Denny Boyd in 1978 and dedicates itself to quality, innovation and excellence in a range of highly diversified specialty sleep products.
