Consumers pinched by the
sluggish economy and seeking
greater value in bedding
purchases, have driven a
dramatic surge in sales of
two-sided mattresses for bedding
retailer
1800mattress.com, which
announced today that the
increased value product now
accounted for 27-percent of its
unit sales in the first five
months of 2009.
“Consumers are telling us that
they are attracted to our $399
to $899 two-sided mattress
program for its increased value.
They understand the double-value
proposition and believe they
will get better performance from
the mattress, even with the
minor inconvenience of flipping
the bed every six months,” said
SVP of Merchandising and Retail
Sales John O’Connell.
Virtually all mattresses were
two-sided until the early 1990s
when specialty sleep products
and some inner-spring
manufacturers began to introduce
the one-sided concept. The
driver for the change was the
convenience factor of consumers
not having to flip the mattress,
but also because not having to
build comfort layers on both
sides of the unit reduced costs
and added to manufacturer’s
margins.
The current 1800mattress.com
two-sided program was designed
by the retailer, in conjunction
with one of its longstanding
vendors; Rex Bedding of
Plainfield, N.J. Rex is an
independent manufacturer
well-known in the industry for
its high-quality value bedding
production.
The two-sided mattress line
starts at $399 and goes up to
$899. Models are available in
firm, plush and pillow top. All
the mattresses start with
inner-spring units and are then
enhanced with foam and other
comfort layer ingredients. They
are wrapped in quality cotton
ticking.
